Future Problem Solving Workshops 2024

Training Workshops for coaches and evaluators are held around the country during the first term. Please contact FPSNZ if you would like a workshop in a venue other than those advertised below. We can run workshops in other areas if there is sufficient interest but they will only run if there are at least ten participants. If you would like some other support please contact the office to see if this is feasible.

The fee for the Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS) workshops is $170 + GST.

Please note that links will be made live once dates are confirmed.

Evaluators’ training is free. We urge you to train as an evaluator – this will give you a great insight into the finer details of the programme and enhance your coaching skills. Senior students who are experienced FPSers are encouraged to become evaluators. Evaluators receive payment for the booklets they mark. On-site evaluators' training courses in Auckland and Christchurch usually run close to the end of the first term, just before the first set of booklets are due from schools. In 2024 there may be the opportunity to train and certify online.

Facilitators - continued

Helen Mansfield - I have been teaching at Kristin School for almost 20 years and have been coaching Middle Division Global Issues teams for most of these years. For me, Future Problem Solving is an outstanding programme for all students but especially for those who are gifted learners. It builds robust problem solving skills, challenges their thinking and encourages them to consider other perspectives. It is real world ‘stuff’ and transfers skills and understandings to so much of their other learning, whilst developing strong communication and collaboration skills which are so essential in today.

I have also been coaching Coaching Community Problem Solving (CmPS) teams for many years and thoroughly endorse this programme. CmPS encourages, rewards  and empowers young people to use their skills, time and talents to really ‘make a difference’ in the world by addressing issues they are concerned and passionate about.

I have coached many teams to national and international competition level and am excited to be taking eleven students to the FPSIC in Massachusetts to represent our school and New Zealand, this June!

Greg Pearce - is an experienced FPS coach and evaluator, having coached teams in both GIPS and CmPS to International Finals. As the Year 7 and 8 Team Leader and Curriculum Coordinator at Selwyn House School in Christchurch, he has a wealth of experience working with Year 5 - 8 teams. Greg has a particular love of the Presentation of Action Plan component of the GIPS competition, and has been part of the adjudicating team for this section of the competition at International Finals.

Christine Sangster - is our Evaluation Director and a very experienced coach. She has had many teams at National Finals over the years and has coached a Community Problem Solving team to international level. Christine has evaluated at International Finals and trained evaluators throughout New Zealand. She is an internationally certified scenario writing evaluator and a member of the International Evaluating team. Christine serves on our National Administration Board.

Peter Scott - taught FPS in the first year it was in New Zealand, is a highly experienced coach and evaluator who has coached a number of teams to International Level. He has also evaluated at the International finals and continues to evaluate at the national level. Peter has run workshops and mentored many teachers as they implement FPS in their schools. Peter has been a valuable member of our National Administration Board.

Sue Williams - coaches FPS at many schools and across many age levels, ranging from Stepping Stones at Year 4 to competitive teams from Year 6 - 13. She is a highly experienced coach who has coached a number of teams and scenario writers to international level. Sue has presented on Scenario Writing at conferences and more recently has successfully coached students in the Scenario Performance component. Sue has also mentored many teachers as they implement FPS in their schools. Sue serves on our National Administration Board.
